Of course, this is only my personal opinion of the book and just because I give this rating to the book doesn’t mean, that everyone will have that opinion.

When I first heard about „City of Nightmares“, I was instantly hooked. The main idea sounded interesting and gave me „Monsters of Verity“ Vibes, and I loved that duology, so I made sure that I picked it up.

My vibe prediction was, in fact, correct, and I enjoyed my reading time. The book had way more horror and brutal elements than I expected for a YA fantasy book. I don’t read horror or thriller novels, so maybe I’m just not used to it.

The world-building was solid for a first book, so I had a good grasp of the system. The main character was also interesting and different from the average fantasy MCs. I liked how she handled her fears and how much progress she had throughout the book.

The main problem I had with the book was the suspense pacing. There wasn’t a climax at the end, but rather more different little ones during the book, so the big plot twist at the end felt a bit flat for me.

I will read the second book in the duology, but I can safely say, that there is no cliffhanger for you to worry about, and you can think of it as a standalone with a bit of an open ending.

Rebecca Schaeffer was a new author for me, and I will look into their other books for sure. I like the darker vibe that I experienced in City of Nightmares.

Overall this was a solid read for me. I enjoyed reading it, but it was still lacking a bit.

Conclusion 

A nice fantasy book for a good reading time!

Ich habe schon den ersten Teil der Reihe regelrecht verschlungen und der Auftakt konnte mich ganz in seinen Bann ziehen! Deshalb wollte ich nun natürlich unbedingt wissen wie es für die Protagonistin weitergehen wird. 

Inhaltlich hat es Nita mithilfe ihres Gefängniswärters geschafft vom Schwarzmarkt zu fliehen. Ausserdem hat sie diesen auch bei ihrer Flucht gleich noch mit in Schutt und Asche gelegt. Doch es sind Bilder von ihr im Darknet gelandet, um sie als ganz besondere Ware anzupreisen. Schnell wird ihr klar, dass sie ein Leben lang auf der Flucht sein wird, wenn es ihr nicht gelingt, das globale Netzwerk der Monster-Schwarzmärkte endgültig auszuschalten...

Der Schreibstil war auch in diesem Band wieder sehr düster, spannend und brutal. Einmal begonnen musste ich in jeder freien Minute weiter lesen da mich die Geschichte sehr in ihren Bann gezogen hat. Sehr lebendig beschreibt die Autorin die Geschichte und teilweise geht einem dies als Leser auch sehr an die Nieren. Es wird schonungslos und brual alles beschrieben und teilweise habe ich mich als Leserin schon auch sehr geekelt. 

Das Buch ist wie schon Band eins nichts für schwache Nerven da es hier auch schonmal ins Detail geht und sehr brutal ist. Die Handlung ist ganz anders wie im ersten Band aber nichtsdestotrotz war die Geschichte auch hier wieder absolut spannend und mitreißend!

Fazit: Brutal und schonungslos, man muss es auf jeden Fall mögen, aber ich fand die Story wieder absolut mitreißend und empfehle daher die Reihe gerne weiter.

Cover: Es passt sehr gut zum ersten Teil. Das Mädchen ist dieses Mal etwas weiter vorn und scheint langsamer zu gehen.

Charaktere/Inhalt: Nita will ihre Rache und Fabricio töten, doch es geht schief. Außerdem sind ihre Feinde gleich hinter ihr her, kaum dass sie die Obhut des INHUb verlassen hat. Sie will ihnen zeigen, dass sie das größere Monster ist und bringt damit nicht nur sie sondern auch Kovit und seinen Bekannten, der sie versteckt hat in Gefahr. Rache oder Flucht das ist hier die Frage.

Fazit: Da Teil 2 nahtlos an Teil 1 anschließt, kam ich dieses Mal sehr gut in die Geschichte hinein. Man erfährt in dem Teil mehr über Kovit und andere »Monster« und ihre Eigenarten und Vorgeschichten. Wer sind eigentlich die wahren Monster? Es gab ein paar Längen und Wiederholungen, aber ansonsten war die Geschichte sehr gut und lesenswert. Ich werde auf jeden Fall Teil 3 auch lesen.
